What is architecture?

به ندرت دانشجویی یافت می‎شود که بتواند به روشنی معماری را تعریف کند. تعریف معماری در فرهنگ لغت عبارت است از: هنر و علم طراحی و بنای ساختمان‎ها.

معماری به عنوان اجتماعی‌ترین هنر بشری با فضای اطراف انسان مرتبط است. حضور فضا، بنا و شهر از گذشته تا امروز و در آینده، لحظه‌ای از زندگی روزمره آدمیان غایب نبوده و نخواهد بود. شهرها پر از ساختمان‎هایی هستند که با استفاده از هنر و مهارت‎های علمی و ریاضی طراحی شده‎اند. این مهارت‎ها در ترکیب با هم عناصر زیبایی‎شناسی نامیده‎ می‎شوند. اصول زیبایی‎شناسی برگرفته از هنر، علم و ریاضیات در طراحی معماری مورد استفاده قرار می‎گیرند، مثل کاربرد خط، شکل، فضا، نور و رنگ برای ایجاد یک الگو، توازن، ریتم، کنتراست و وحدت. این عناصر در کنار هم به معماران اجازه می‎دهند تا ساختمان‎های زیبا و مفید خلق کنند. به بیان بهتر، اصول زیبایی‎شناسی به اضافه جنبه‎های ساختاری به ساختن یک ساختمان موفق کمک می‎کند.

موضوع معماری درباره فضاست. تعاریف مختلفی که تاکنون از معماری ارائه شده است، اغلب به گونه‌ای بر اهمیت فضا در معماری تاکید می‌کنند، بطوری‌که وجه مشترک بسیاری از این تعاریف، در تعریف معماری به عنوان فن سازماندهی فضا است. به عبارت دیگر موضوع اصلی معماری این است که چگونه فضا را با استفاده از انواع مصالح و روش‎های مختلف، به نحوی خلاق سازماندهی کنیم. از دیدگاه  اگوست پره(Auguste Perret) ، معماری هنر سازماندهی فضاست و این هنر از راه ساختمان بیان می‌شود. ادوارد میلر اپژوکوم (Edvard Miller Upjokom) نیز معماری را هنر ساختن و هدف کلی آن را محصور کردن فضا برای استفاده بشر تعریف می‌کند. به گفته لامونت مور (Lamont Moore) نیز معماری هنر محصور کردن فضا جهت استفاده بشر است.
