در شهر وین، پایتخت کشور اتریش، در سه دانشگاه عمده زیر، به آموزش معماری پرداخته می شود:

1)دانشگاه فنی وین که دانشگاه پایه برای کلیه رشته های مهندسی و از جمله معماری است. ویژگی مهم دانشکده معماری این دانشگاه، تفکیک حوزه ها و گرایشهای مختلف در معماری از یکدیگر و اختصاص انستیتوهای مجزا برای هر یک از این گرایشهاست.
2)دانشگاه هنرهای زیبا. در این دانشگاه خانم فرشید موسوی، معمار ایرانی الاصل و پایه گذار دفتر معماری Foreign Office Architects در لندن، به عنوان رئیس دپارتمان معماری، فعالیت دارد. او علاوه بر ریاستِ دپارتمان، استاد راهنمای دانشجویان نیز در استودیویی که به نام او - استودیو موسوی - مشهور است، می باشد.
3)دانشگاه هنر کاربردی. در این دانشگاه نیز، استودیو های طراحی زیر نظر استادان صاحبنظری از جمله زاها حدید، گرگ لین (United Architects) و ولف د. پریکس (Coop HimmelBlau) اداره می شود.

پذیرش دانشجو در دانشگاههای دوم و سوم، از آنجا که در گروه دانشگاههای هنر طبقه بندی می شود، با آزمون ورودی و با پذیرش سالانه تعداد انگشت شماری دانشجو، انجام می گیرد.
نکات قابل توجه در سیستم آموزشی معماری در دانشکده فنی اتریش، در مقایسه با ایران اختصاراً بشرح زیر می باشد:
سیلابس درسی رشته معماری، معمولاً در طی یک دوره زمانی چند ساله به آزمون گذاشته می شود و پس از سپری شدن چندین سال تحصیلی و مشخص شدن نقاط ضعف و قوت آن، سیلابس جدیدی بر مبنای این نقاط ضعف و قوت نگاشته می شود. در سالهای اخیر، سیلابس درسی در سالهای 1993، 2001 و 2005 طبق نیازها و خواسته های جدید تحصیلی چندین بار بازنگری و اصلاح شده است.
تحصیل معماری در مقطع فوق لیسانس (کارشناسی ارشد) تا سال 2005 بصورت پیوسته در 10 ترم تحصیلی و با گذراندن مجموعاً 216 واحد درسی، طی دو بخش صورت می گرفت.
بخش اول تحصیل (معادل دوره لیسانس)، از مجموعه ای از دروس ثابت و مشخص تشکیل شده که همه دانشجویان ملزم به گذراندن آنها در شرایط یکسان هستند. فکر می کنم که عنوانهای ذکر شده در هر خانه، گویای محتوای مطالب هر واحد درسی در جدول بالا باشند. فقط باید توجه داشت که در سال اول تحصیل (ترمهای اول و دوم) تاکید خاصی بر روی آشنایی و شناخت دانشجویان از معماری و ابزارهای کاری آن صورت می گیرد. در این دوره آشنایی، تقریباً نحوه کار با نرم افزارهای مورد نیاز معماران، به دانشجویان آموخته می شود و آنها پیش از ورود به استودیوها و واحدهای طراحی، بر نرم افزارهای مخصوص طراحی و نقشه کشی احاطه پیدا می کنند.
نکته قابل توجه در جدول بالا، آزادی عمل و امکانِ انتخابی است که دانشجویان در بخش دوم تحصیلی (معادل دوره فوق لیسانس) از آن برخوردار هستند. گستردگی و تنوع واحدهای ارائه شده در بخش دوم چندان وسیع است که به ندرت دو دانشجو، مسیر مشابهی را در این دوره تا اتمام تحصیلات خود طی می کنند. 23 گرایش مختلف درمعماری از طرف دانشکده به دانشجو ارائه می شود و هر دانشجو به دلخواه باید حداقل در 2 گرایش از مجموع این 23 گرایش پیشنهادی تحصیل کند.
حدود 30 موضوع مختلف برای واحدهای طراحی معماری در بخش دوم تحصیل، در ابتدای هر ترم و با برگزاری یک جلسه معارفه عمومی با حضور تمامی انستیتوها و اساتید ارائه دهنده طرح، به دانشجویان پیشنهاد می شود، و انتخاب موضوع طراحی پس از شنیدن محتوا و خواسته های هر طرح، به دانشجو واگذار می گردد. در واقع در این حالت، استاد و انستیتو مربوطه سعی می کند با تبلیغات و ایجاد جاذبه های خاص در موضوعهای پیشنهادی، دانشجویان را به سمت استودیو طراحی خود جذب کند. موضوعات مطروحه برای طراحی در هر ترم متغیر است و موضوعی که یک بار ارائه گردیده، در ترم بعدی ارائه نخواهد شد. تاخر و تقدم طرحها و رعایت پیش نیازی نیز در واحدهای طراحی معماری – مثلاً تقدم طراحی مسکونی بر طراحی شهری –در این مقطع تحصیلی از اهمیت چندانی برخوردار نیست و محدودیتی از طرف دانشگاه در این زمینه به دانشجو تحمیل نمی شود.
نظام آموزش معماری در کشور اتریش، بر پایه سیستم انستیتو-محوری به جای سیتم استاد-محوری طرح ریزی شده است. یعنی برخلاف واحدهای طراحی ایران که یک استاد محور کلیه فعالیتهای آتلیه و راهنمایی طرحهای دانشجویان است، در اتریش یک انستیتو وظیفه هدایت و پیشبرد پروژه های دانشجویی را بر عهده می گیرد. در واقع، دانشجو برای کار، مجموعه ای از اساتید را در پیش روی خود دارد وهر بار برای کرکسیون می تواند دست به انتخاب بزند و به یکی از آنها مراجعه کند.
